To whom it may concern.
Hi All
Without prejudice.
I just heard that the distributors will not be used anymore and TI will now market directly. Here in South Africa the only reason why we use TI is because of the support we get from the distributors. Other avenues does not yield results. All I can say is that TI sales in SA is going to take a serious knock. But that is just my humble opinion.
Kind regards
Ben
“THE BEAST IS HERE: LAUNCHXL-F28379D”
Hello Everyone,
With Two TMS320C28x 32-Bit CPUs and having a processing power of 200MHz, TMS320F283779D can be compared nothing less than to a Beast!
Received the Latest C2000 Launchpad today and I’m here with a quick review and hands-on.
Previous Hands-on you would like to check :
BOX & ITS CONTENTS:
Let's open the Black Box and view its contents:
The Box contained:
1. LAUNCHXL-F28379D Launchpad
2. USB-Mini Data Cable
3. Meet the Launchpad User Manual
4. Terms and Conditions Leaflet
Before we connect the launchpad to the PC, let's do a comparison between all the C2000 launchpads and understand where this launchpad stands.
COMPARISON:
The above comparison clearly indicates that LAUNCHXL-F28379D Launchpad is the most superior launchpad C2000 family has to offer.
FIRST TIME CONNECTION WITH PC:
There are 2 things that we need to check before we start playing with the launchpad. Navigate to Device Manager and check:
1. Proper Driver Installation
2. COM PORT ASSIGNMENT: (COM8 in my case)
Once you're sure that the device is installed correctly you can check the power LED on the launchpad. Lets have a look at the powered launchpad now:
The Green LED indicated Power.
Running the Out-of-box demo:
This demo is similar to the previous launchpad demo i.e. Lighting the appropriate LED (Blue or RED) with respect to the ADC threshold. To describe you all in detail:
ADCIN14 (PIN 23) is sampled once per second and there are two actions that are taken according to the ADC input. Here are the two cases:
1. If the sample is above the mid-scale (1.5V/2048) - The RED LED (D9) would light up
2. Else if the sample is below the mid-scale - The BLUE LED (D10) would light up
I performed the above two exercises and here are the results:
1. I connected ADCIN14 to 3.3V pin on one of the header
2. Next, I connected ADCIN14 to GND pin on same header
The Real-Time ADC digital values can be observed on a Terminal application. I used TeraTerm to log the data and I've recorded a video for you all to observe the live updates:
(Please visit the site to view this video)
One thing I wanted to mention here is, this out-of-the-box demo seems to be a poor rip-off of the previous launchpad LAUNCHXL-F28377S. If you observe the above video carefully, you can see that the terminal display still mentions F28377S Delfino Launchpad.
Hence I'd a look at the out-of-the-box demo code and observed that "ti_ascii.h" header file was same for both the launchpads and hence this mistake. I hope TI takes care of this mistake asap :)
Conclusion and my quick thought about the F28379D launchpad:
This Launchpad or the part TMS320F28379D is specially targeted towards industrial drives and servo motor control audiences due to the introduction of special feature "DesignDRIVE Position Manager". Apart from these applications, this part can be utilised to its fullest for solar inverters and converters, digital power, transportation and power line communications.
This part thus overthrows the previous launchpad and hence claims the title of "The Most Powerful C2000 Launchpad"!
Note: Don't forget to update your controlSuite for the board design files and out-of-box source code.

The Most Powerful C2000 Launchpad: LAUNCHXL-F28377S
Hello Everyone,
Here’s the most powerful and compact C2000 launchpad “LAUNCHXL-F28377S” which is equipped with TMS320F28377S Delfino Controller. Received the kit couple of days back and I’m back with a quick hands-on as usual.
Previous Hands-on LAUNCHXL-F28069M:
Box Contents:
Now comparing with the previous launchpads LAUNCHX-F28069M & LAUNCHXL-F28027/F
- FASTEST @ 200 MHz compared to 90MHz (LAUNCHX-F28069M) & 60MHz (LAUNCHXL-F28027/F).
- 16-Bit ADC as compared to 12-bit in previous launchpads
- Additional peripherals like DACs, EMIF, DMA, McBSP, uPP that were absent in previous ones.
- Has CLA, TMU & VCU II accelerators
- Finally more memory (RAM & Flash)
First-time connection with PC:
The moment F28377S based launchpad is connected to PC, respective drivers get installed and a Virtual COM Port is assigned. This COM Port value can be verified by navigating to device manager:
In my case, BeagleBone USB Serial Port (COM49)
Running the Out-of-box demo:
This demo demonstrates the ADC sampling phenomenon by comparing the digital values with the mid-scale value (2048) to blink the respective LED (red or blue).
In short, if ADC value is less than 2048 : blue led would glow else if greater, then red led would glow. You can monitor the digital values on terminal application using COM Port.
I used Hyperterminal for monitoring digital values.
1) ADCIN14 (Pin 23) when left open ie floating or grounded: BLUE LED Turns ON
On Hyperterminal
- Floating:
2. Grounded:
2) ADCIN14 (Pin 23) when connected to 3.3V ie J1 Pin no.1 : RED LED Turns ON

PoE General FAQs
- What’s the difference among IEEE 802.3af, IEEE 802.3at and IEEE 802.3bt standard?
PoE was first introduced in IEEE802.3af in 2003 and the max operating power defined for PSE was 15W. In 2009, IEEE802.3af was replaced by IEEE802.3at and the max power was increased to 30W. In the upcoming release in 2018, IEEE802.3bt will be targeting max power up to 90W. Each new standard release will be backward compatible with prior release(s). The newer standard will embrace and supersede the previous standard(s). For example, the .af standard is now defined as Type 1 (<15W) in the .at standard. And the power range between 15W and 30W are called Type 2. This rule also applies to IEEE802.3bt. There will be Type 3 and Type 4 added to the IEEE802.3bt standard. Everything defined in 802.3af and 802.3at will be covered in 802.3bt.

- How does data signal and power operate in the same Ethernet cable?
There are total four pairs of wires in Ethernet cable. When PSE operates in Type 1 and 2 modes, the power signal runs two pairs of wires while data signal is injected into either two pairs of wires. For power greater than 30W, all four pairs of wires will be used. A data transformer is applied to couple data signal coupled on to the wires. On the receiving end, another data transformer will be used to decouple the AC signals from DC power lines.

- What are the anticipated changes between 802.3.at and 802.3.bt?
The first change is the maximum power the load can consume. There will be two new types(Type 3 and Type 4) created to allow the PSE to source up to 60W and 90W(52V ~57V).
The second change is about the mutual identification. 802.3.bt expands existing 2-finger Type1(15W) & Type 2(30W) scheme:
− New long 1st class finger “informs” PD that the PSE will support the new MPS timings
− 4-Finger: Type 3 power levels up to 60W
− 5-Finger: Type 4 power levels up to 90W
The third change to the standard is about the standby power, which is related to the power signature that a PD must generate in order to maintain the PSE power. The maintain power signature (MPS) consists of a specific DC current amplitude, time duration and duty cycle. “New” Lower Maintain Power Signature timings adopted in order to enable much lower standby power. A long first class event has been defined in order for the PSE to tell the PD it can use the new MPS timings.
The forth change is the Autoclass feature which will allow better power optimization by the PSE. Basically, it allows the PSE to set the power budget to the maximum PoE PD power through a power measurement, including the cable losses.

- When is the new IEEE802.3bt ratification expected?

- How is the handshake done between PSE and PD (detection, classification and inrush)?
Before ports turn on, PSE and PD are required to complete the handshake procedure (detection, classification and inrush) to ensure a valid PD is connected.
PSE starts this procedure by sending detection current signal and calculates the detect resistance based on measured voltage. The detect resistance is considered valid if it falls in the range of 19kΩ to 26.5kΩ. After successful detection, PSE starts classification by sending voltage signal and at the same time, PD removes detect resistor on the port and presents class resistor. If PD determines the classification signal is valid, PD will turn on the internal LDO which applies 2.5V across the class resistor. PSE measures the current going through the class resistor and recognize class level of the PD.
After a valid classification result (not overcurrent or class mismatch), PSE will turn on the port and start monitoring inrush current. At the same time, PD takes the control to limit the inrush current (~140mA). If the current keeps below PSE’s inrush current limit (~425mA) during Tstart (maximum allowed overcurrent time during inrush) period, PD will pull full load and the port starts normal operating.
More information can be found in TPS23861: http://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/tps23861.pdf
This E2E post shows improper handshaking between a PSE and PD; it also shows proper handshaking using our TI EVM.
- How to verify a PSE product or PD product is IEEE compliant?
A couple recommended ways of doing interoperability testing are: Sifos test and IOL (InterOperability Laboratory) in University of New Hampshire. Sifos test is based on the automatic testing equipment. IOL does bench testing with a list PoE devices to test the interoperability. TI is very involved in the standard definition and driving industry-wide “PoE Logo” certification program with Ethernet Alliance.
SIFOs: http://www.sifos.com/
UNH-IOL: https://www.iol.unh.edu/
TI’s PoE products pass the interoperability tests, see TPS23861 test report:

http://www.ti.com/lit/an/slua722/slua722.pdf
- Why is soft-start so important with PoE devices?
During startup, the DC-DC converter tends to overcompensate for the low output voltage by attempting to operate at maximum duty cycle. This is prevented by the soft-start circuit that slowly increases the peak current of the current mode DC-DC converter. However, if the soft-start capacitor is inadequate and significant current overshoot occurs, the input current to the DC-DC converter may exceed the current limit threshold of the hot swap MOSFET. If this occurs, the power good condition can be violated, which will subsequently shut off the DC-DC Converter, preventing startup. Load conditions during start-up should also be considered when selecting the soft-start capacitor; the regulator should start cleanly over all loading conditions.
More information is discussed on page 19 of TPS23753A datasheet.

Hi All
Without prejudice.
